Kolem roku 1900 americké noviny začaly publikovat nový akční a humorný žánr, který je pro nás snadné identifikovat jako komiks. Také víme, že komiks se objevil ve stejném roce jako film a fonograf. Tierry Smolderen ovšem ve své výtečné knize plné překvapení přesvědčivě dokazuje, že původ tohoto zdánlivě nového žánru je třeba vidět mnohem dál v minulosti. Zrození komiksů je možné, podle Smolderena, pochopit jenom ve spojitosti s objevením se úplně jiného žánru, a sice moderního románu v 18. století v Anglii. Satirické práce malíře a rytce Williama Hogartha otevřely tuto cestu, která vedla nakonec ke spojení obrazu s moderními médii. V průběhu 19. století impuls daný Hogarthem převzala skupina kreslířů, ilustrátorů-humoristů, kteří zasvětili svoje specifické umění parodii a vypěstovali stylistický hybrid. Fascinováni světem graffiti, dětskými kresbami a okrajovými ilustracemi byli první, kdo se zmocnili nových médií a schematizovali je a kombinovali v ironickém duchu. Od Rodolpha Töpffera se také datuje tendence škodolibého vysmívání jazyku z prostředí průmyslu, počínaje evokacemi minulosti naivních historek populárních obrázků. Moderní komiks vzniknul zcela jednoznačně v tomto polygrafickém kotli, v kterém nechyběla žádná z revolučních změn vedoucích později k audiovisuálnímu věku.
Zrození komiksů předkládá nový pohled na to, co jsme si mysleli, že známe. Kniha prokazuje, že komiksy se neobjevily jako nové medium náhle na přelomu století, ale že mají kořeny hluboko v minulosti a to v čteném obrázku, což je fenomén tak starý, jako tištěný obrázek. Obláčky, výrazná obrysová linie, postupná akčnost, ironie reflexivity, to vše poukazuje na vývoj, který je mnohem starší a bohatší, než si současní autoři uvědomují. Původní dialog obrázku s progresivním románem v 18. století, později s románem romantického období, jeho dlouhodobá co-existence v ilustrovaném tisku stejně jako jeho symbiosa se světem filmu, to vše přispělo ke komiksu jako jednomu z nejmocnějších prostředků vizuálního světa.
Thierry Smoldern, teoretik a professor na Evropské škole vizuálních umění, je jedním z vedoucích odborníků na historii komiksů. Publikoval řadu článků ve francouzských časopisech (9eArt), stejně jako v amerických publikacích (Comic Art). Jeho výzkum, postavený na nových teoretických základech, mu dovolil objevit doposud neznámé fascinující dokumenty. Mezi jeho komiksovými scénáři vyniká např. životopis McCay (kresba J. P. Bramanti, Delcourt publications) a seriál Ghost Money (kresba D. Bertail, edice Darguard).

Around 1900 the American newspapers started publishing a new genre full of humour and action that we have no problem identifying as comics. And we also know that the comic strip appeared in the same years as the film and the phonograph. Yet what Thierry Smolderen convincingly demonstrates in this wonderful book is that the origins of this new genre are in fact much older, and that one can only understand the comic strip by linking it to the birth of a totally different genre, that of the modern novel, which appears in England during the 18th century. It was the satirical work of the painter and engraver William Hogarth that bridged the gap between image and novel and it was Hogarth who made a seminal contribution to a new narrative environment, allowing totally new forms of interaction between the image and the evolving media of the 18th and 19th centuries.
During the 19th century, the new impulse given by Hogarth remained exclusively in the hands of a particular group of draughtsmen, the humoristic illustrators, who devoted their immense visual culture to parody. Fascinated by the world of graffiti, children’s drawings and marginal illuminations, these artists were the very first to seize the opportunities given by the emerging media of the 19th century, which they combined and schematized in a spirit of irony. After Rodolphe Töpffer, they also played around with the sequential languages of the industrial world, which they challenged through their evocation of the naïve popular visual narratives of the past. The modern comic strip was forged in this resolutely polygraphic crucible, missing none of the major revolutions on the way to the audiovisual age.
The Many Births of Comics proposes a new and fresh vision of what we thought we already knew. The book argues that instead of being a new medium that suddenly emerged at the turn of the century, the comic strip is rooted in a much older culture, that of the readable image, a culture as old as that of the printed image. The speech balloon, the clear line, the visual rhetoric of progressive action, ironical reflexivity, even the crazy physics of the toons connect it to a genealogy that is much older and richer than present day authors imagine The initial dialogue of the comic strip with the experimental novel of the 18th Century as well as with the illustrated book of the romantic era, its long lasting cohabitation with the rythms of the illustrated press, its symbiosis with the world of the film, all these elements make comics one of the most dynamic sources of renewal for today’s images.

Scriptwriter, theorist and Professor at the European School of Visual Arts, Thierry Smolderen is one of today’s top experts in the history of the comic. He has published numerous articles in French magazines (such as 9e Art) as well as American publications (such as Comic Art). The new theoretical foundations on which his research is based on have allowed him to reveal fascinating documents, which until now were unknown. Among his graphic novel plots, one can point out the imagined biography of McCay (illustrated by J-P. Bramanti, Delcourt publications), and the Ghost Money series (illustrated by D. Bertail, Dargaud publications).
